For the most luxurious stay in El Cuyo, look no further than Cucu Hotel & Kite. This posh property boasts 5/5 stars on Google Reviews, and an impressive 9.5/10 rating on Booking.com. After my recent stay here, I’m so in the know about why Cucu Hotel is all the rage.

Location is Everything

El Cuyo is a beautiful beach town tucked along the sparkling, eastern edge of Yucatan’s Emerald Coast. It’s a serene and rustic paradise, without a hint of the relentless mass tourism that blankets the neighboring Riviera Maya. Think of it as the happy place you escape to when you want to leave the world behind.

Within this oasis, Cucu Hotel & Kite is at the end of El Cuyo’s main road, nestled between lush jungle and the cerulean Kite Beach. Privacy seekers will love Cucu Hotel’s uber private location, tucked away at the edge of town. There are no neighbors on 3 sides of the hotel. Just a spacious patch of Mother Nature separating Cucu Hotel from a dwelling to the west.

While Cucu Hotel El Cuyo isn’t directly on the beach, it’s only a quick jaunt across a sandy road from the hotel. I made it to the beach from my 2nd floor, Deluxe Suite in well under 2 minutes. And that was while lugging an 8-year-old and assorted beach gear!

If you’re looking for some beachside pampering (I mean, who isn’t!), Cucu Hotel is conveniently located a stone’s throw from the highly-rated Copal Spa Holistic Center.

A Warm Welcome

Cucu’s customer service was excellent from the jump. Before our getaway arrived, the hotel quickly and easily allowed me to reschedule my dates due to a tropical storm headed into the region. Flooding can get intense in the Yucatan Peninsula (it’s not unusual for entire roads to be submerged under water), so making the 3 ½ hour drive from Merida to El Cuyo would’ve been plain dangerous.

After selecting my new dates via WhatsApp, the hotel informed me that my original booking missed their current promotion, which was book 2 nights, get the 3rd night free. So I tacked an extra night onto my revised dates. I mean, who encourages you of their own volition to have a free night on them? Super awesome Cucu, that’s who!

TRAVEL TIP ➡️ Even if your booking says it’s non-flexible, or doesn’t allow for cancellations, you should still contact your hotel or booking provider to discuss making changes when an emergency arises. Don’t forget hotels are in the hospitality business. Their top priority is to satisfy and accommodate you — their cherished guest!

When we arrived at Cucu, check-in was quick and smooth. The hotel manager greeted us immediately and helped us with our luggage. In the beautifully-designed Reception area, we reviewed our reservation details, received our room key and selected the next day’s breakfast. Then the manager brought our luggage upstairs, while the lady from Reception showed us around our Deluxe Suite. All smiles, all good.

We really got the feeling that Cucu’s staff cared about our well-being. Not because it’s their job, but because they’re good people. Turns out this is a theme in El Cuyo. The locals are absolutely lovely, genuinely friendly and caring.

Overall, our check-in at Cucu was by far one of the easy-peasiest hotel check-ins I’ve ever experienced. The complete opposite of my last Mexico experience, where I endured a 30-minute timeshare pitch at a mega-resort in Cancun, after a 3-hour drive, and before ever setting foot in my room.

The Vibe

Cucu Hotel & Kite El Cuyo is giving barefoot luxury vibes. This was apparent to me as soon as I spotted the metal pails of water discreetly scattered around the hotel grounds. This thoughtful touch, meant for dipping dusty feet, invites you to kick off your shoes, and toggle your toes in the sand. It’s also one of several details I noticed that signal guest experience is Cucu’s top priority.

The 6-room, boutique hotel is quite beautiful, and aesthetically riveting. It’s a low-slung feast of undulating architecture, mixed with serene and high-quality interiors, that immediately lull you into having not a care in the world. Which explains why, not long after arriving at Cucu, I sank blissfully into the hotel’s unique promise: “Time moves slowly here. Enjoy every minute.” 

Guest Rooms

I adored our Deluxe Suite. It had the feel of a well-appointed boutique hotel that I would expect in any major U.S. or European city. The suite was large (645-square feet), luminous, meticulously clean, and warmly-decorated in soothing earth tones. We slept long and soundly, with the blackout curtains doing their job, and the crisp linens and pillows on our king bed being ultra-comfy. 

Our suite also had 2 sofas that convert into twin-sized beds for extra guests (the Deluxe Suite can accommodate 4 guests). Normally, this is where our son would have slept, but he preferred sleeping in the room’s copper-colored hammock. The hammock was family-sized, a whimsical amenity that spanned the entire width of the room! 

The Deluxe Suite’s real show stopper is the bathroom. I would seriously drive back to El Cuyo for this powder room alone! This minimalist luxe space boasts double sinks, a large shower with magnificent water pressure (better than in my home!), and a built-in, concrete soaking tub so deep you have to see it to believe it. A window above the tub frames unobstructed jungle views. Bathroom drawers were plentifully stocked with fluffy towels and cotton robes in an elegant waffle-pattern.

I’m compelled to give a shout out to the one bathroom detail at Cucu Hotel that makes all the difference in the world – a hermetically-sealed trash can! If you’ve been to Mexico, you know you can’t flush TP down the toilet (Mexico’s plumbing can’t handle it). So, into the trash the TP goes. You can imagine how unpleasant this might be if the trash isn’t emptied frequently! 

Hermetically-sealed trash cans don’t exist at some of the nicest hotels in the country, so imagine my surprise to find this thoughtful touch so far off the grid! Again, it’s the details at Cucu Hotel that place it a cut above the rest.

All of Cucu’s rooms feature spacious, private balconies. Ours had an oversized, built-in seating nook that overlooked the pool. I loved this space for reading, journaling and enjoying morning coffee. 

In-Room Amenities

In-room amenities at Cucu Hotel are top notch. All rooms have powerful air-conditioning, multiple ceiling fans, safes that are large enough to accommodate laptops, and Starlink wifi, which worked great for us in-room and throughout the property. Suites and Double Rooms come equipped with Smart TVs. But for some reason, King rooms aren’t.

Both the Deluxe Suite and Family Suite have fully-equipped kitchens featuring an electric stove, a refrigerator with a built-in water and ice dispenser, and a sink (no dishwasher). Our stocked refrigerator had plenty of snacks for purchase, including soft drinks and cervezas. Kitchens include all the bells and whistles you’d need for a long stay — pots, pans, plates, bowls, a coffee maker, utensils, a toaster, and even a blender.

The one thing we did miss in the kitchen was a microwave. This would’ve been great for heating up all the delicious leftovers we brought home from El Cuyo’s great restaurants.

The large dining table in our suite was constructed of high quality wood. It can easily accommodate 6, even though room capacity is only 4. And I’m a big fan of the bench seating for its stylish, contemporary touch.  

Hotel Amenities & Perks

Cucu’s refreshing, oblong pool is the heart of the hotel. It’s surrounded by plush loungers and umbrellas where guests can lounge to their heart’s content. Neighboring the pool is an outdoor shower, as well as an inviting and shaded picnic table where guests can request to have breakfast.

For beach-goers, the hotel provides everything you need for the ultimate beach day: beach towels, beach chairs, a beach shade, beach toys, a grill, and even a pull cart for transport. There are no loungers or umbrellas on El Cuyo’s beaches, so it’s a real boon not having to schlep any beach necessities with you to El Cuyo. Again, Cucu Hotel doing the most!

The property has a sizable fleet of bicycles that guests can freely use. These include junior bicycles for children, and bicycles with child seats for parents of youngser guests. Cucu Hotel also has stand up paddle boards for hourly rental, and works with a local kitesurfing school to provide guests with kite board rentals and lessons.    

One of the highlights of our El Cuyo getaway was a private boat tour of the Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve. Cucu Hotel’s manager happily set this up for us at the last minute. Randy, our local guide recommended by the hotel, was really incredible. He took us out on the water with care, and explained the local ecosystem in fascinating detail. If you decide to have Cucu Hotel arrange this tour for you, it’s best to have some intermediate Spanish under your belt.   

Food & Bev 

We didn’t mind that Cucu Hotel lacks an on-site restaurant because we were eager to indulge in all the delicious food around town! El Cuyo is tiny, so restaurants are never more than five minutes away, no matter where you stay.

Cucu Hotel does, however, serve guests a hearty breakfast, along with a 4-cup carafe of fresh coffee every morning. They rotate a weekly menu from which guests can choose between 2 daily breakfast options. Being a vegetarian, I love, love, love that one of these options is always plant-based! The hotel delivers breakfast to wherever you specify — your room, the picnic table or poolside.

Sustainable Touches

You won’t find single-use plastics at Cucu Hotel. The property provides several glass bottles of purified water for guests upon arrival. There are also additional glass bottles which you can refill with purified water from the dispenser on the refrigerator door.

Bathroom amenities are 100% biodegradable. Shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, and moisturizer are all provided in bottles that the hotel refills following each stay. Dish soap for the kitchen sink is also provided in a refillable container.

Value for Money

Cucu Hotel is one of the more expensive accommodations in El Cuyo. But when you consider that it’s the most luxurious hotel in town, and that it boasts excellent online reviews, Cucu Hotel is totally serving value for money.

Standout Feature

Cucu Hotel’s exceptional customer service. The staff was always friendly, available and efficient. And again, they really gave us the sense that they cared about our well-being.

Staff kept common areas spotless, and housekeeping worked some serious magic on our room during our stay. We were offered bikes, beach gear and breakfast menus without us ever having to ask. One morning, the kitchen staff mixed up our breakfast. 3 new meals were brought to our room within 10 minutes

Every interaction my husband and I had with Cucu’s staff, from changing our original booking, to arranging our tour of Ria Lagartos, was A+.   

Any Cons?

No on-site restaurant might be a dealbreaker for some people, but it wasn’t for us. The hotel’s daily breakfast indicates that a kitchen clearly exists on the property, so maybe a restaurant will pop up in the future. We’ll see! 

It was a bit inconvenient to not have a microwave, because we did waste some leftovers. But it’s debatable whether not being able to nuke food in paradise is really a con.

How to Get to Cucu Hotel & Kite El Cuyo

Once you’re in El Cuyo, Cucu Hotel is a cinch to get to. After crossing the lagoon and entering town, turn right on the main road and keep driving until you nearly reach the end. Cucu Hotel & Kite will be on your right side — keep your eyes peeled for the sign. There’s plenty of parking just across the road from the hotel.
