TABLE OF CONTENTS
What to know before you go

El Cuyo is a marvel of laid-back living nestled along an unspoiled stretch of virgin beach on the Yucatan Peninsula’s Emerald Coast. This idyllic sandbar is a haven for flamingoes, sea turtles and kite surfers, and exists miles and miles away from anything that matters in the wider world. You’ll find that the most pressing thing to do in this tiny, tropical corner is escape and recharge.
What El Cuyo is not, is a Mexico mega-resort town with unsustainable mass tourism. So it’s not the spot to vacay if you’re looking for any kind of “scene.”
It’s important to understand that El Cuyo is a rustic jewel. We’re talking about a pea-sized fishing village located inside the Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve. This is a precious ecosystem full of extraordinary vegetation and hundreds of animals — including jaguars, which are facing extinction — that is heavily protected by the Mexican government.
Visitors to El Cuyo will find friendly residents who are fiercely proud and protective of their environment. They’ll also find hotels and vacation rentals that put a heavy emphasis on sustainable eco-tourism.
How can I visit El Cuyo sustainably?

♻️ Support local eco-tourism in El Cuyo.
♻️ Make a small investment in reusable straws.
♻️ Ditch single-use plastics like water bottles in favor of a refillable bottle, or thermos.
♻️ If you have any glass, plastic, cardboard, or paper to dispose of, ask your hotel about recycling first.
♻️ For the love of god, please don’t leave trash behind on the beach. Or anywhere, ever, for that matter.
♻️ Don’t bring individual bottles of shampoo, lotion, shower gel, etc., which you’ll need to toss when empty. Many hotels on this list offer refillable, biodegradable bathroom amenities.
What is a boutique hotel?

Boutique hotels are smaller properties, usually considered to be under 100 rooms. They are known to offer a more intimate and personalized guest experience than large or chain hotels. Boutiques strive to make guests feel at home by incorporating personal touches. Think elements of character, interior design, hotel offerings, and high customer service standards. They are often independently-owned and operated, which means they can sometimes be less expensive than large hotels.
Personally, I prefer boutiques. While I certainly appreciate large hotels, I’m a sucker for all the style and soul that unique, boutique stays offer. If I can’t wake up or come home to a vibe, I’d prefer not wake up or come home at all!
That said, technically all El Cuyo hotels are boutiques because none has more than 100 rooms. In fact, the largest hotel on this list has just 22 rooms.
Are any El Cuyo hotels on the beach?
Only 1 property on this list is directly on the beach.
But keep in mind that El Cuyo is tiny. The town is 2 miles long, and a little less than 1 mile wide. No matter where you stay, the beach is less than a 5-minute walk away.
How did I choose the hotels on this list?
My insider’s list of the 10 best El Cuyo hotels is based on:
💫 size
💫 location
💫 customer service
💫 sustainability factors
💫 personal experience
💫 hotel amenities & offerings
💫 unique & thoughtful design
💫 online reviews provided by both Google and Booking.com
I separated hotels into two categories: kid-friendly El Cuyo hotels vs. adults-only El Cuyo hotels. I did this for a few reasons. But mainly because kid-friendly hotels are hard to come by in El Cuyo.
I also did this because I believe that discerning travelers, who happen to be parents, shouldn’t have to sacrifice the style and service boutique hotels are known for because we’re traveling with kids. And because those traveling without children shouldn’t have to spend their hard-earned vacation putting up with someone else’s kids!
Best Kid-Friendly El Cuyo Hotels
Cucu Hotel & Kite
🌟 Google 5 / 5 | 💰 $$$

By far the most luxurious stay in town, Cucu Hotel & Kite El Cuyo is my top choice for the best hotel in El Cuyo. In fact, I adore this jungle hideaway so much that I wrote a an entirely separate review. But, as you can tell from Cucu’s glowing online reviews, I’m not the only one besotted with this excellent El Cuyo accommodation.
The curvaceous Cucu offers 6 refined rooms with attention to detail in all the right places. Rooms feature exposed plaster walls, polished concrete floors, and are adorned in calming earth tones with beautifully-crafted wooden furniture. Air conditioning is strong, and rooms have multiple ceiling fans to override the jungle heat.
All rooms have hammocks, a spacious balcony and a beautiful bathrooms with either a shower, or deep soaking tub. Suites measure a generous 625-square feet, and can accommodate up to 4 guests. They also have fully-equipped kitchens that are perfect for longer stays.
Sustainable touches at Cucu include no single-use plastics on-site. Bathrooms have refillable containers for bio-degradable amenities like shampoo and shower gel, and rooms are stocked with refillable, glass bottles for keeping water in the fridge.
My stay at Cucu Hotel was nothing short of amazing.
Diana c.

The heart of Cucu Hotel is its divine, oblong pool. Other perks include a kitesurfing school, free bicycle use for guests, and plenty of beach amenities (chairs, umbrellas, and even a grill). Speaking of, El Cuyo’s Kite Beach is a just 2-minute walk from the hotel.
Cucu Hotel doesn’t have an on-site restaurant. They do, however, provide breakfast delivered to your room every morning. And big bonus for us plant-based folks – breakfast always includes 1 plant-based option.
✿
PROS: Excellent reviews; Starlink Wi-Fi in all rooms & common areas; air conditioning; bicycles and beach gear for guest use (including kids bikes and children’s bicycle seats); tons of suggestions and help for private tours and activities; children under 13 stay free.
CONS: No microwaves in-room; Smart TVs not available in king rooms; no on-site restaurant.
Casa Mia
🌟 Google: 4.8 | 💰 $$

Casa Mia El Cuyo Eco Beach Boutique Hotel is a tranquil escape for vacayers looking to chillax in minimalist style. The hotel is located in a serene pocket of El Cuyo that’s just a 1-minute meander from Kite Beach. Perfect real estate for unwinding in paradise, as Casa Mia’s excellent online reviews attest.
Casa Mia’s ethereal vibes shine through in evocatively-named rooms, like The Palm View, Garden Love, The Suite, and The Sky. The Suite gives guests magnificent sea views. The Sky, a private penthouse, has sweeping 270-degree views of Kite Beach and El Cuyo’s surrounding lagoons.
Beautiful, tranquil, secluded, very friendly, and welcoming place to stay.
Tricia h.
Casa Mia’s neutral-hued guest rooms feature work spaces, fully-equipped kitchens and 10-foot high ceilings that allow for cooling sea breezes. Expect a private balcony, or terrace, that’s equipped with a hammock for dozing off in the sun.
In lieu of an on-site restaurant, Casa Mia offers the Magna Kitchen, a shared culinary space where guests are encouraged to interact and dine together. Another common area is the Bala Shala, a rejuvenation space where guests can arrange for meditation sessions, yoga classes or private massages.
Sustainable travelers will love that Casa Mia supports local environmental groups. For 8 years, Casa Mia has run a waste reduction campaign called No Mas Plastik (No More Plastic), which strives to educate hotel guests on how to reduce their environmental footprint. Casa Mia is also a low-waste property. The hotel manages its own trash, and treats waste-water in its wetland garden.
While Casa Mia is kid-friendly, guests must be 10 years of age or older.
✿
PROS: Terrific online reviews; big sustainability factor; excellent location; offers kite boarding lessons, eco-tours and opportunities to rent kayaks and paddle boards; lots of shared spaces; provides guests with beach chairs & umbrellas.
CONS: No air conditioning in guest rooms; no pool; no on-site restaurant; only children aged 10+ allowed.
Mero Mero
🌟 Google 4.8 / 5 | 💰 $$

Mero Mero Hotel is another fine, sustainable El Cuyo hotel that conscious travelers will love (more on that below). I passed the charming, stone facade of this centrally-located hotel numerous times during my trip. It’s in the center of El Cuyo, right next to the pier, and mere steps from the town’s beautiful beach. Mero Mero also houses the buzzy Laguna Cafe & Restaurant. Beach & grub – win win!
Mero Mero has 10 eclectic rooms in a remodeled house that mixes contemporary architecture with relaxed, Yucatecan design. The hotel’s breezy guest rooms have updated, traditional touches like pasta tile floors, rattan furniture and henequen light fixtures. Rooms either open onto views of the main plaza and internal courtyard, or showcase partial sea views.
Everything is beautifully designed, the rooms are so comfortable and the shower is one of the best I’ve ever used in a hotel!
Jessica N.
The rooftop of Mero Mero is home to an open, shared kitchen (seems to be a thing in El Cuyo) where guests can cook and mingle. But the real showstopper upstairs is the spectacular infinity pool, where you’ll also be dazzled by sweeping ocean views.

When it comes to sustainability, Mero Mero is doing the most. A portion of the hotel’s revenue is devoted to the education and preservation of local environmental projects. Mero Mero also adheres to several sustainability tenants: The hotel treats its own wastewater, has solar panels to reduce electricity consumption, uses biodegradable amenities in rooms, and is part of a local project called “El Cuyo es Tuyo” (El Cuyo is Yours), which seeks to generate as little waste as possible.
If you’re traveling with kids, only the Family Suite at Mero Mero can accommodate up to 4 guests. Be sure to book this high-demand suite well in advance!
✿
PROS: Steps from the beach; big sustainability factor; on-site restaurant; rooftop infinity pool with sea views and daybeds; central location; WI-FI; 100% biodegradable amenities; air conditioning; great reviews.
CONS: Rooms on the main square may be noisy; no on-site parking; some online reviews mention noise from construction nextdoor.
Casa Mate Beachfront Cabanas
🌟 Google: 4 / 5 | 💰 $$$

Casa Mate is the only beachfront El Cuyo hotel on this list. I passed rear side of Casa Mate many times during my walks on the beach. Believe me, I was plenty jealous of all their sun loungers dotting the sand!
Waking up and having the ocean right there is incredible 😍
micaela c.
Casa Mate is actually a cluster of individual cabanas scattered across the sand above El Cuyo’s shoreline. These stylish dwellings combine a textured mix of various local woods, with distressed concrete walls and floors, which are accented by rattan fixtures. Rooms are furnished with colorful linens, and can accommodate anywhere from 1 – 4 guests.

Some of swanky oceanfront suites enjoy terraces with private plunge pools. All cabanas have air conditioning and Wi-Fi. An on-site restaurant serves breakfast (included in your booking), and there are several options for lunch and dinner.
And it’s not just kids that are welcome at Casa Mate. If you’re traveling with pets, they’re welcome here, too!
✿
PROS: Beachfront; online reviewers love the restaurant; air conditioning & Wi-Fi in all rooms; pet-friendly.
CONS: No onsite parking; no mention of any sustainability measures; no mention of help arranging tours or activities.
Dos Mares
🌟 Google: 4.2 / 5 | 💰 $$

Dos Mares Pool Club Boutique Hotel is the largest accommodation on this list, weighing in at 22 rooms. It’s just a quick stroll across the sandy, main road to El Cuyo’s beach. Room decor showcases understated, locally hand-crafted accents. Rooms have either sea or lagoon views, and a handful up the luxe factor with private plunge pools.
If you decide to stay at Dos Mares, you’d do best to check your modesty at the front door. Showers are located in the main bedroom, with see-through glass partitions exposing whoever is in the shower, to whoever is in the room. This peek-a-boo feature might work for some couples and families, but it’s definitely not for all guests.
Guests can enjoy a dip in the hotel’s rooftop pool, where they can also indulge in all-day cocktails. The rooftop also houses Fum, a restaurant that promises diners “an amazing journey from the roots of Mexico to the Mediterranean.”
Right in front of the beach, the view from the rooftop is incredible, as well as the sea view from the room!
marta b.

While Dos Mares is a viable boutique option for travelers, I find it important to share that there’s no love lost between the property, and locals and environmentalists. A petition condemning Dos Mares’s negative environmental impact, entitled #SalvemosElCuyo (We’ll Save El Cuyo), garnered 30,000 signatures during its construction.
This is because the hotel’s density and height exceed the limits imposed on most building within the Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve.
Building density and height can pose significant environmental issues. These include preventing migratory birds from safely passing through El Cuyo, and emitting light pollution that prevents sea turtles from nesting on the beach. Increased waste is also a problem, opening up greater possibilities for garbage and sewage to infiltrate the subsoil, and filter into the sea.
Dos Mares is kid-friendly and beautifully-designed. But it’s not the best choice for eco-friendly travelers, or for travelers wishing to preserve El Cuyo’s village-like charms.
✿
PROS: Stylish, contemporary rooms with hammocks and plunge pools; rooftop restaurant and pool; guest discounts on kite board rentals and lessons at Tropikal Kitesurf Center.
CONS: Larger than other boutique hotels in El Cuyo; not eco-friendly; no designated parking; guest rooms lack safes and refrigerators.
Best Adults-Only El Cuyo Hotels
LunArena
🌟 Google 4.3 / 5 | 💰 $$

LunArena is an adults-only haven tucked away in a hidden pocket of jungle at the edge of El Cuyo’s main road. The hotel’s privileged location offers guests privacy and quick, easy access to Kite Beach, the most secluded patch of sand in town. Lunarena is also ideally located next to El Cuyo’s Copal Spa & Holistic Center, which pampers its patrons with beachside massages and facials.
LunArena’s sunny guest rooms are awash white linens with playful pops of teal. Guests can expect rooms to come with a terrace or balcony equipped with a hammock, and offering either jungle or sea views. Some rooms, like the Lunamar and Lunalaguna, are whimsically furnished with beds that are suspended from the ceiling.
Travelers will also appreciate LunArena’s charming, all-day restaurant, which shares a lush, garden landscape with the hotel’s pool.
We stayed in the Laguna Vista room and loved it! Great view – you feel like you are alone on the planet.
Raum p.

LunArena has plenty of pros, but there are also some mixed, online reviews, too. Some rooms lack air conditioning, which can be a dealbreaker in a tropical climate. Other complaints point out spotty Wi-Fi, and in-room kitchens missing basics like cups and plates.
✿
PROS: Gorgeous grounds; excellent location; some rooms have fully-equipped kitchens; on-site restaurant; many guest rooms have spectacular views; available to help organize local tours.
CONS: No air conditioning in some rooms; no televisions in room; wonky wifi; mixed online reviews.
Hotel Can Cocal
🌟 Google: 4.7 / 5 | 💰 $$

Each of Hotel Can Cocal’s six, impeccable rooms is color-coded, with names matching the particular hue that defines the room. There’s the Yellow Room, Blue Room, Red Room, Orange Room.. You get the point.
Design here errs on the side of minimalist cool. Floors are polished concrete, walls are exposed plaster, and lovingly-selected deco is handcrafted by local artisans. Travelers in the mood to splurge can book one of the hotel’s 2 guest rooms with a private, rooftop terrace. These feature outdoor soaking tubs and magnificent sea views that won’t disappoint!
Hotel Can Cocal doesn’t allow young children, but they do accept guests aged 15 and older. This makes it a great option for parents traveling with teenagers, as some spacious rooms can accommodate up to 4 guests.
Absolutely stunning rooms with fantastic attention to detail that made an overall luxurious experience.
Kash r.
I didn’t stay at Can Cocal, but I most certainly dined at its delicious restaurant. Twice — it’s that good! This vibrant spot serves a great selection of Mediterranean dishes. Diners will find plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, alongside tacos and cocktails, in a beachy setting backlit with chill house tracks.
Even if you don’t stay Can Cocal, do yourself a favor and hit their restaurant. It’s easily one of the best dining spots in El Cuyo!
✿
PROS: Well-appointed rooms; great location; some rooms have private terraces with outdoor soaking tubs; offers airport transfer; delicious, on-site restaurant.
CONS: Can Cocal’s website doesn’t say if the hotel takes any eco-friendly or sustainable measures.
Downwind Deck
🌟 Google: 5 / 5 | 💰 $$

Downwind Deck is El Cuyo’s premier, home-away-from-home for kitesurfing enthusiasts. Their sporty and colorful guest rooms are designed to meet kitesurfers’ every last need. Expect kite board storage space and gear washing stations, along with Downwind Deck’s on-site shop, which sells all the goodies you need for an exhilarating kite excursion.
Fantastic place with great vibe, run by two of the most amazing people who care about their guests greatly.
Krzysztof m.
Downwind Deck’s airy guest rooms pop with kitesurfing-themed decor. Amenities include air conditioning, private terraces, microwaves, and workstations. Larger, 400-sqaure foot suites come equipped with kitchens, and outdoor showers. This El Cuyo hotel provides not one, but two forms of Wi-Fi – local Wi-Fi, and Starlink. Reliable Wi-Fi in El Cuyo is a crapshoot, so having backup is thoughtful and valuable!
Downwind Deck sits parallel to El Cuyo’s main road, making for a short walk to the beach. Hotel guests returning after a long day at sea can relax and refuel at Downwind Deck’s on-site, Asian-inspired restaurant.
✿
PROS: Kite surfer’s paradise; 2 forms of Wi-Fi; outdoor showers; 1 room on premises allows for pets; air conditioning; paddle board rentals; on-site kitesurfing shop.
CONS: Minimum 4-night stay; not a lot of online reviews, but the few they have are all 5-stars.
Ca’ Nikte Cabanas
🌟 Google: 5 / 5 | 💰 $$

Ca’ Nikte Cabanas are a collection of cozy, individual bungalows located a 5-minute walk from the beach. Design is thoughtful and serene. Interiors provide a loft-like living space, with king or queen beds on a mezzanine level, and a sitting area, dining space and kitchenette below.
Cabanas have jungle views and private terraces, where you can linger on hammocks, or rattan seating. There are ceiling fans and Wi-fi, but cabanas lack air conditioning and televisions. Ca’ Nikte has excellent, online reviews, which tells me it’s so great you’ll hardly miss these creature comforts.
The bungalows are super charming, cozy and best of all quiet.
erik s.
This El Cuyo hotel is happy to share suggestions for renting paddle boards, kite boards and even ATVS, however they don’t appear to offer discounts for guests. And if you have a furry friend, bring ‘em — Ca’ Nikte allows dogs!
✿
PROS: Great ratings; self-contained apartments; free Wi-Fi; cool mezzanine layout; dog-friendly; on-site parking.
CONS: No televisions; no air conditioning; a bit of a longer walk from the beach than other El Cuyo hotels (but still only 5 minutes).
